Iceland

After three years of discussion the hubby, my sister, her lovely boyfriend and I finally booked flights to hunt the Northern Lights in Iceland.

Our adventure was scheduled for January this year and after a very early EasyJet flight from Luton followed by a three hour delay because the plane door would not close we finally arrived in a very windy and very snowy Reykjavik. After much debate we decided to hire a big 4x4 Suzuki Grand for 213 EUR for our stay, which we eagerly drove from the airport straight to the Blue Lagoon!

We decided to go for the comfort package, which we pre-booked giving us queue jump, fluffy white towels and a drink in the lagoon (sparkling wine, beer, a variety of juices and smoothies). With our sparkling vino in hand and face masked up to the max we relaxed and unwound in the lagoon moving around finding the warmest spots! It was an incredible experience and well worth a visit.

From the lagoon we drove into the city center and found our hotel, the Hotel Odinsve. We had booked a two double bedroom family suite, which was comfortable, clean and very modern in decor. This was ideal as also had a large sofa and dining table for social space, which is nice when holidaying as two couples.

That evening we dined at the Fish Company. The bread and flavored butters (caramelized onion and apple) were divine but the JAPAN and ICELAND starters were well worth the wait! The mains (CHINA and FAROE ISLANDS) I thought were less impressive but still delicious.

For our first day in Iceland we used the company Mountaineers of Iceland who picked us up in a huge super jeep and drove us around the golden circle as well as over a glacier for a snow mobile adventure. The jeep was hilarious and so much fun, we towed other cars and trucks out of the snow and it felt like a really fun wilderness challenge. The snow mobiles were great, we were given all of the warm gear and went on in two's. The hubby did manage to crash ours (they are harder to drive than they look) and I got stuck underneath but the staff were excellent and I was rescued very quickly unharmed!

That evening, being exhausted we opted for a "posh" fish and chips experience from the Icelandic Fish & Chips. No standard deep fat fries here, instead wholesome new potatoes and only the freshest fish with a variety of interesting dips.

For our last full day we took a snorkeling tour using Dive.IS. This was an insane experience! After a prompt collection we were driven to a spot between Eurasia and North America. We were given warm suits, literally like ski suits to place under a conventional wet suit so essentially keeping you completely dry in the water. There is no wildlife, in fact we had a bet to find a fish but the rock formations are really interesting and to be able to say you snorkeled in Iceland in January is incredible on it's own! I would thoroughly recommend this tour and I promise it is not as cold as you would imagine.

After an exhausting but invigorating and exciting three nights in Iceland it was time to head home but if I could give one word of advice to potential visitors it would be, PLEASE BOOK YOUR FLIGHT NOW!!!
