Roadtrippin' Croatia - Two Week Itinerary

Last summer we took a two week trip around Croatia, hours and hours of research went into making this the perfect little trip so I thought I would share what I discovered to help you plan your holidays!

We flew direct with British Airways from London to Dubrovnik. We actually pre-booked a taxi from the airport to our hotel Dubrovnik Palace where we stayed for three nights.

Our first afternoon was spent wandering the city walls and old town Dubrovnik before having an Al Fresco meal at a little recommended restaurant called The Taj Mahal, which served some good, cheap Eastern European food. For day two we decided to take a kayaking trip around Lokrum Island, which was incredibly hard work on the arms but so worth the effort for the scenery. For our final day we decided to hire a car and drive to Montenegro (you must remember your passport and also tell your hire car company as you need certain documentation). We visited Kotor and Budva Beach as well as drove through the absolutely stunning Kotor Bay. Montenegro is a beautiful country and well worth the days detour or an overnight stay if possible.

From Dubrovnik we took the 3.5 hour drive down to Split, along an absolutely stunning coastal road. We only had one afternoon here so we had a little wander around the old town and parked ourselves in a square for some dinner!

In the morning we got up bright and early to drive down to the ferry terminal to buy a ticket as you can only buy these on the day of departure and they do sell out. We took the ferry to Hvar Island where we spent six nights at the Amfora Grand Beach Resort. If you do not have a car like us, you also have the option of a hovercraft and then would need a bus or a taxi to Hvar Town.

We spent most of our time lazying by the pool and the beach as well as eating and drinking in the amazing bars and restaurants each evening. However, we did do two day trips. The first was we hired a little motor boat from a guy just outside our hotel, which was £80 (seated five people) for the day including fuel and we motored around the Pakleni Islands, anchoring up to jump in and out of the crystal clear water. For our second day out we took a trip to the Blue & Green Cave as well as Vis Island through a guy called Vinko who is based in the marina.

With heavy hearts we had to leave our precious Hvar and head back to Split via the ferry. From here we drove to Plitvice Lakes via Krka Falls. We stayed for one night at the very wooden but pretty cool Ethno Houses, Plitvica Selo where we also ate our evening meal. We really loved the cabin in the woods feel and the evening board games over a beverage. We took two of the main hiking trails in Plitvice after a good nights rest and these took about 2-3 hours each but were well worth it to see all of the falls and scenery.

From Plitvice we ventured up to Zagreb where we stayed at Hotel Dubrovnik, which was centrally located. For dinner we ate at Trilogija, which was incredible! We went for the mixed meat option and were served a delicious surprise meal with gorgeous wine all for a very, very reasonable price. Please do not come to Zagreb without eating here, it was the best dinner time experience of the entire trip.

In the morning we took a Segway tour, which was brilliant fun before dropping the car at the airport and taking an internal flight (45 mins and £40 per person) to Dubrovnik. From here we couldn't resist another couple of nights in the sunshine before heading home so checked into Hotel Croatia for a little bit of luxury. We spent our days in the sunshine and during our evenings we walked into the gorgeous little coastal town of Cavtat for food and drinks.
