Beautiful Bangkok

For out ultimate holiday (our Honeymoon) we took off from London Heathrow direct to Bangkok with British Airways for a sixteen night stay in Thailand. We married on the 7th November 2014 and flew to Asia the following afternoon. Brits don't need a visa for Thailand but we did have to wait in a little queue and fill out an immigration form to get through. We took a limo from the airport to our hotel, it was £40 and expensive compared to a taxi but we were tired from a long flight and didn't fancy a potential negotiation.

Our first stop was two nights at The W, Bangkok. We booked a basic room as on a city break you don't spend much time inside and were very impressed. We were sent cupcakes as a congratulations and the room itself was bigger than expected with a huge bed, wide screen TV and most importantly a huge rain forest shower and spacious soaking tub. We had fluffy towels, comfy robes and slippers! There is no bathroom door here but a sliding glass partition for the toilet area. For a little tip, take a business card out and about as the hotel is quite new and not all of the taxi drivers knew where it was!

The pool area here is gorgeous! It's secluded and doesn't feel like you are in a city. The poolside service is good and beers come wrapped in mini coolers, it's the little things that count! The best part is they play music underwater in the swimming pool!!!! The gym was well equipped and modern and the spa was to die for. I had a one hour full body massage and a one hour facial in a clean and relaxing environment. I was thoroughly spoiled. The spa is expensive for Thailand but not for a 5* hotel experience so all in all I could justify the luxury, it was my Honeymoon after all!

For our first evening in Bangkok we chose to eat at Above Eleven. First impressions aren't ideal with having to walk around the back of a building into a dingy elevator but it's so so worth the trip. The views over Bangkok are breathtaking. Make sure you book in advance and ask for a table at the edge. They have a restaurant area and a bar area and you go through a mini maze to access the toilets!!! The food and cocktails here are great. We chose to order about six starters between us to nibble at rather than a main course. Make sure you order the spring rolls filled with chicken in a creamy sauce, they were the best thing we tasted!

On our one and only full day in the city we felt it was a must to be cultural so took a private five hour tour of the temples, Grand Palace and Thonburi Klongs. The trip starts early to avoid the midday sunshine so be warned! We were collected in an air conditioned car and driven to the long tail boat where we sailed through the klongs, which was really interesting. Next we stopped at a few temples before heading to the Grand Palace. Our guide was informative and we learnt a huge amount about Bangkok, Thailand and the places we visited. I would recommend a tour as the sites are heaving with people and you need someone to explain everything and bring the area to life.

Night two's dinner spot of choice was Cabbages & Condoms, which is well worth a visit. The food and cocktails here are dirt cheap for a city center and still pretty delicious. It's not quite as fine dining as other establishments but good hearty Thai food. The restaurant is really pretty, ask to be seated outside under hundreds of fairy lights and surrounded by a beautiful garden. Make sure you look at everything made out of condoms from light fittings to statues. Some of the money made supports local charities so it's great to dine on good food whilst helping a good cause. Instead of an after dinner mint you will be presented with an after dinner condom!

After an amazing couple of days in Bangkok it was time to head out into Thailand for our adventure. I do appreciate there is so much more you can do in this city but you have to remember we were tired and jet lagged and ready to hit relaxation mode. Hopefully one day we can come back and experience everything else there is to offer in this huge metropolis!
